Everyone knows sourcing is much easier than manufacturing, running a factory needs heavy investment in facility, equipment, IT system, as well as a lot of time on management.

Probably this is the way it has to be in metalworking industry. For complex or high precision parts, problems and complaints may happen at any time if you don’t have a professional engineering, production and QA team to control the quality. In addition, it’s very hard for sourcing company to find a supplier with reliable quality at affordable price for low to middle volume custom-made parts.

Precision machining is full of challenge, which depends on many factors and many processes. Tight tolerance can’t be achieved consistently in case there is problem with any factor or any process. It’s not difficult to deliver 1-100 pieces of precision parts at one time, but it’s tough to deliver these parts each time or 1000+ pieces at one time without quality issue, so you have to establish a quality assurance system.

All of the following factors are a must for “precision”:

1. Good equipment and supplies: CNC machines, CMM, materials, tools, coolant...

2. Professional people: process engineers, programmers, technicians (setup, inspection), operators, PMC, buyers, etc;

3. IT system: We have made 3000+ types of parts, there would be disaster everyday without IT system such as ERP/MES;

4.Quality assurance system: good processes and everyone follows processes. IQC/IPQC/ FQC/ OQC must be done in place;

5. Good environment: clean, tidy, well-organized. For parts with micrometer tolerance parts, stable temperature is a must;

6.Capacity of supplier chain management such as heat treatment, surface treatment, grinding, welding, wire-cutting.

Should any failure occur, some dimension might be out of tolerance. This is why so difficult to find a reliable supplier with good quality at good price. Good quality needs heavy and continuous investment in the above 6 aspects, there is no free lunch.
